Chrono Trigger Remake a Possibility!
If there is a single RPG out that is loved by all RPG enthusiasts, and gamers in general, it is probably Chrono Trigger. Sure you could argue that Final Fantasy VII takes that honor, but real gamers, from pre-Sony days really know who the king of RPGs are. So how would you feel about a remake?
First let me start off by saying that Square-Enix is no stranger to remakes. Many of their games get remade every year. In fact, the two most recent remakes are probably Final Fantasy IV and Dragon Quest IV. Both were great games and I can’t wait to play them. In any case, a remake is different from a port. All of the new Final Fantasy IV-VI games on the GBA were just ports with some added extras. A remake implies a complete overhaul of the graphics and physics engine in addition to additional goodies. Thos of you with sharp memories can probably recall that Chrono Trigger was already ported to the PS1 a few years ago just before the PS2 came out. A good game, but not really a remake. This is why it is such a big deal when I am referring to a remake, not a port.
So where am I getting this lovely information? Directly from an interview with the creator himself in an interview with Nintendo Power. Takashi Tokita, creator of Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger, made this remark:
“Chrono Trigger was a no-holds-barred, swashbuckling adventure that was a lot of fun to work on… If the demand is great enough, it’s certainly possible. But as a creator, I feel the need to create new titles and not just series installments and remakes. I realize it’s a little strange for me to be saying that in an interview about Final Fantasy IV (laughs). But I need to remind myself of that, too.”
So that’s it! A remake is definitely a possibility. Nothing set in stone but hey, at least we are getting a definite “maybe”. Perhaps they could get in touch with the Chrono Resurrection team as they seem to have done most of the leg work anyways.
To any Square-Enix execs in the crowd: I will buy TEN of your Chrono Trigger remake games if you do it… I’m just saying.
