Play Final Fantasy VI… Now.
Got an extra GBA lying around? How about that DS you hardly ever use? Hell even an old SNES will work. Bottomline, you need to play Final Fantasy VI (III on SNES) right now. I have long been an advocate of great RPGs and they don’t get much greater than FFVI. I’m not intentionally trying to pimp the game on Square’s behalf either, this is just one fantastic RPG adventure.
Do you remember a long time ago, before Final Fantasy XII came out, Square was touting the game as not having a main character? Each character in the game would have their own unique story that was important to the overall storyline. It was a nice vision, unfortunately, it didn’t last. We soon found out that Final Fantasy XII would have a main character and his name would be Vaan. Empty promises… In anycase, Final Fantasy VI really didn’t have a main character. While not every character was as important as others about half of them were no equal than their counterparts. It allowed for a very unique storyline that didn’t chain you to one character.
Of course, in addition to the robust character line-up, the story was just flat out amazing. Better than Final Fantasy VII, better than Final Fantasy X. FFVI followed your ragtag band of heroes through the seeds of a revolution, to the possible genocide of an entire race, through the destruction of a world, and into the depths of insanity. Epic is hardly the word for the storyline with Final Fantasy VI.
So please, I beg you, play this game. Encourage your RPG friends to play it. If there was ever a Final Fantasy to have deserved a real remake it is this one. I’d even settle for a sequel!
