Debate of the Week: Best Final Fantasy
There is a lot of debate over which is the best Final Fantasy game. The two obvious choices would be either Final Fantasy VII, or Final Fantasy VI. Of course, those that really know the series will also have found much enjoyment out of some of the other Final Fantasy games, such as IX, X, IV, and maybe even XI (the MMORPG). There are many, many Final Fantasy games out there to choose. So many, in fact, that it makes this choice very hard. So which one is the best?
Final Fantasy VI. There is not much more to it than just coming right out and saying it. Naturally, this is always a personal opinion type of thing, but for those who have actually taken the time to sit down with this game and play it all the way through, they’ll probably agree with me. The game combines that perfect flavor of story, character, world, and one evil bastard of a villain. The graphics might not seem all that great nowadays (2D sprites) but the gameplay and story are there, and really, isn’t that what RPGs are all about?
Of course, Final Fantasy VI has some stiff competition. Naturally the crowd favorite is probably Final Fantasy VII, a great game as well. However, one of the things that irked me with VII, as compared to VI, is that you have a main character, Cloud. Don’t get me wrong. I totally thought Cloud was awesome in VII, however, when an RPG straps you in with a main character you feel attached to that character. You feel compelled to use him and to always keep him in your party, even if there is an option to not use him. VI did not have this and, as such, made the game more enjoyable, especially through replays.
Let’s not forget the others though. Final Fantasy IV, V, VIII, IX, X, and Tactics were all great games too. Unfortunately, despite how much fun they were, they are pretty much forgotten when it comes to a debate like this. Each one had their own unique storyline, characters, and, in the case of Tactics, a very unique style of gameplay. Great games… all of them, but not the best.
Anyways, like I said above, this is more of just a personal preference. There will be people who just can’t get over Final Fantasy VIs simple graphics, and there will be those of you who thought that X was the best one ever. However, here on RPGhead.com, Final Fantasy VI is the winner… that counts for something right?

FFV was the best! I might be the only person in the world who thinks that but it was the best of the best generation of FF’s (the SNES generation). The classes are what it’s all about and gives customization to your characters, and the two special American only bosses at the end are great. The story might be a little weaker but I also appreciate that you don’t have to waste hours doing pointless storyline junk like reliving the esper world stuff or the opera house stuff.
Sorry but I can’t agree with you. FFVI while great, was still too much of the same thing that you had come to expect from the series. FFVII was the first of the series that was truely groundbreaking. It was way ahead of it’s time in terms of gameplay and graphics and it was the first of the series to truly attempt to bring the game and the characters to life. It’s story was by far the best of any of the series and it’s characters were by far the most memorable. To say that the story only revolved around cloud is oh, so wrong. The story was about Sephiroth more than anything else. There is a reason that it’s the crowd favorite and most requested series to be remade.
ff4 for the story and ff3 for the game play and class changes. all the games were pretty good in there own way and had there strong points but i must say that ff4 has the best story of all… tho it lacks the graphics of todays final fantasy games.
Kyzer, I think everyone would agree that the actual gameplay on VI is superior to the meteria whore VII. The story in VII is also overly complicated and totally lack pacing (snowboarding after Aerith’s death anyone?) Don’t get me wrong, VII is a great game, but its not VI, not even close.
For me its 9, tactics, 6, 8, 10, and 7. In that order. Because I grew up playing the first FF’s. And 9 took everything about the 8 FF’s before it and made it a masterpiece. All the old music, character and location mentionings. The characters I loved more than any other FF because they had more personality than any other. Plus the story and villians were the best.
FFVIII was the best…. great story, weapons, and the junctioning system was awesome.
For me, 10 will always be my favorite, it will Most likely end up to be the final one in the main storyline to support turn based combat. 10 has and will forever have one of the best, long, engaging story, i have never had more fun playing an RPG,and dont get me i wrong i loved 7 to but 10 is better(marco its Materia).
10, I loved it, great storyline, great game play some wonderful scenery awesome characters. For me it was perfect.
I vote VII, then X. IX had some lovable characters as well. But hey I see no mention of the latest installment, Crisis Core. This game is amazing. I bought this a few weeks after God of War COO, thinking that I wouldn’t play it much b/c GOW was such a great game. But as soon as I put it in it brought back great memories from the very beginning and has only gotten better. Great game. the best one of the PSP.
